Artist Statement
I am inspired by the fluidity and transformative nature of water—a force that balances tranquility with movement, evoking both calm and vitality. I invite the viewer to feel immersed within the cascade of a waterfall or the calm of a country pond, where light filters through falling water and movement becomes experience.Through multiple translucent layers, I build depth and complexity, echoing the way a water shapes its path over time.
This rhythmic flow reflects the journey of life—ever-changing, shaped by resistance, and illuminated by moments of clarity. My work seeks to capture not just the image of water, but its energy, presence, and quiet power to transform.
Brief Bio
Barbara Jamison transitioned from a distinguished 20-year career as a senior marketing executive in New York, Rome, and London into a full-time artistic practice, shifting from the analytical to the expressive. Long drawn to art, she immersed herself in sculpture and painting, exploring clay, pastels, and oils in search of a medium that could fully capture her deep connection to nature.
She found that voice in acrylics—though not in a traditional sense. Through experimentation, Jamison developed a distinctive approach using fluid, layered techniques that evoke the movement, energy, and rhythm of water and the natural world. Her work inhabits an aquatic-organic realm, where translucency, motion, and depth converge. The process itself is both intuitive and immersive, drawing her to the studio daily with a sense of discovery and creative fulfillment.
Born in Rye, New York, Jamison holds a BA from Georgetown University and an MBA from Columbia Graduate School. Her corporate career included leadership roles such as Vice President and General Manager for American Express Italy and Vice President of Marketing for American Express Europe.
She currently serves on the Board of The Bascom Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands NC, where she leads the Public Art Task Force focused on developing an outdoor sculpture walk in Cashiers. Jamison lives and works in Cashiers NC, with her husband, Jim.
